IIT Patna Online MBA: 4 Programs Compared (Fees, Eligibility, Reviews 2026)
Research partner: College Vidya | Data sources: IIT Patna continuing education hub and program pages
Searching for the IIT Patna online MBA can lead you to four different programs, not one. They run through two service partners and differ in fees, eligibility, weekly hours and even the wording on the degree. The numbers also don’t match from page to page.
Short answer: IIT Patna offers four hybrid MBAs, and they are not interchangeable. The programs are the MBA, the MBA in Generative AI & Product Management, an MBA run jointly with IIIT Ranchi, and the MBA in Finance. All four combine live online classes with a short campus component. IIT Patna’s hybrid programs began in July 2023, so none of them has a long graduate track record yet. This guide compares them side by side using IIT Patna’s continuing education hub, the programs’ own pages and brochures, and public student discussions as of October 2026. Where sources disagree, we show both figures.

Who Runs These Programs? (Service Partners)
IIT Patna’s hub lists three of the MBAs under Microtek Educational Society and the MBA in Finance under TeamLease EdTech. Both partners handle admissions, delivery support and student services, while teaching and academic control stay with IIT Patna.
The IIIT Ranchi MBA stands apart. Its sample degree in the brochure shows both institutes’ logos and says it is conferred by IIIT Ranchi’s Board of Governors, with signatures from IIT Patna’s Registrar and both directors. So it is a joint degree and not a plain IIT Patna degree. The other three carry IIT Patna’s name alone.
Key differences at a glance
- MBA: the broad option, with a core plus six specialization tracks. Suited to graduates who want general management.
- MBA in Gen AI & Product Management: technology-heavy and the costliest of the four, aimed at people moving toward AI-led product roles.
- MBA with IIIT Ranchi: the lowest advertised fee and the lowest weekly time commitment, but with a joint degree.
- MBA in Finance: finance-only, with a work-experience requirement, which makes it the most specialised.
Eligibility for All 4 Programs
| MBA | Gen AI MBA | IIIT Ranchi MBA | MBA in Finance | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Degree | Any discipline | Any discipline (preference for science, tech or engineering) | Any discipline | Any discipline |

| Relaxation | 2.5% marks per year of experience, up to 10% | Same | Same | 2.5% per additional year |
| CAT/GMAT | Not required | Not required | Not stated | Not stated |
Note the wording differences. The Microtek brochures describe these programs as “designed for working professionals”, while the web pages say experience isn’t mandatory. If you’re a fresher, confirm in writing that you’ll be admitted.
Admission Process
All four use an application-based process, and the Microtek MBA pages mention no entrance exam. The registration fee is ₹6,000 for the MBA, ₹10,000 for the Gen AI MBA and ₹5,000 for the MBA in Finance. TeamLease’s page describes shortlisting on work and education profile, an offer letter from IIT Patna, and payment of the admission confirmation fee within 7 days.
IIT Patna MBA Fees, Offers and Extra Charges
Tuition and total fee
- MBA: ₹82,000 a semester, ₹3,28,000 in total, per the program page
- Gen AI MBA: ₹1,14,000 a semester, ₹4,56,000 in total, per the program page
- IIIT Ranchi MBA: ₹56,400 a semester, ₹2,25,600 in total, per the program page
- MBA in Finance: ₹87,500 a semester, ₹3,50,000 in total
List price vs offer price
The IIIT Ranchi MBA’s brochure shows ₹73,000 a semester (₹2,92,000) as the standard fee and ₹56,400 as an early-bird price that waives exam and immersion fees. An earlier Gen AI MBA brochure showed a similar early-bird figure of ₹4,12,000. The MBA in Finance page shows a struck-out ₹3,86,000 reduced to ₹3,50,000. Ask whether the lower figure is still available.
Extra charges
For the Microtek MBAs the brochures list:
- Exam fee: ₹5,500 a semester
- Supplementary exam: ₹1,000 a paper
- Campus immersion: ₹10,000
- Degree and convocation fee: ₹3,000
- Optional alumni fee: ₹6,000
The exam and immersion fees are described as waived “for a limited time”. At MBA in Finance, exam and immersion fees are included in the semester fee.
Payment plans, EMI and scholarships
The MBA brochure offers a 5% discount for paying a year upfront (₹1,55,800) and 10% for paying the full program at once (₹2,95,200), plus Central and State Government scholarships (conditions apply). Zero-cost EMI is ₹13,667 a month over 24 months on the MBA, subject to lender approval.
Refunds
MBA in Finance: 80% within 15 days of paying a semester fee, 50% within 30 days, nothing after that. IIT Patna also publishes a refund policy for hybrid programs.
Duration, Time Commitment and Exams
All four run for a minimum of two years (four semesters). The Microtek MBAs allow up to four years. The web pages state 24–28 study hours a week for the Microtek MBAs and 8–10 for the IIIT Ranchi MBA, a big gap that the brochures don’t resolve because they give no weekly hours.
The Microtek MBA brochure says exams are online and proctored, held on weekends, and weighted 30% assignments, 20% quizzes and 50% end-semester exam. At least 75% attendance, in live or recorded classes, is required, and MBA in Finance has the same rule. One older Gen AI brochure lists an end-semester exam “in physical mode” as part of campus immersion, which differs from the online-proctored format, so confirm your batch’s format.
Curriculum and Specializations
MBA
- Semester 1 (core): Principles of Management Practices, Data Science for Business Decisions, Principles of Marketing Management, Finance and Account Fundamentals, Organizational Behavior, Corporate Social Responsibilities
- Semester 2 (advanced core): Managerial Economics, Business Research Methods and Ethics, Corporate Finance, Corporate Law, Management Accounting, Business Analytics
- Semester 3: a specialization track from Finance/FinTech, HR, Marketing, Data Analytics & Decision Science, Operations & Supply Chain, or Generative AI
- Semester 4: Project Management, Product Management, Indian Knowledge System and a Research Project
The credit total is 84 for a single specialization and 100 with an optional 16-credit minor. The brochure says “dual specialization”, so a second track is probably the same as the minor. Confirm how this works and what it costs.
MBA in Generative AI & Product Management
It is AI-heavy from Semester 1: Foundations of AI Models for Product Management, Machine Learning Algorithms for AI-driven Business, and Generative AI Strategy in Customer Service Operations. Semester 3 adds Deep Learning, NLP and Computer Vision. Semester 4 ends in a capstone and dissertation on one elective, from Applied NLP, Vision Transformers, GPU Architecture & Programming, Robotics & Automation and Explainable AI.
MBA with IIIT Ranchi
No semester-wise syllabus is published in the materials we reviewed. The brochure describes a dual-specialization structure from a pool of seven areas, and the web page doesn’t list courses.
MBA in Finance
- Semester 1: Managerial Economics, Introduction to Financial Accounting, Management Concepts, Marketing Management, E-Commerce, Communication and Negotiation Skills
- Semester 2: Organizational Behaviour, Business Statistics, Operations Management, Financial Management, Global Supply Chain Management, Business Law
- Semester 3: HR Management and Analytics, Security Analysis and Portfolio Management, Business Ethics and Governance, Strategic Management, Financial Derivatives, Taxation for Business
- Semester 4: Financial Analysis and Reporting, Project Management, Strategic Financial Management, Financial Engineering, Project Work
TeamLease marks the list as indicative and subject to change.
Campus Immersion
At MBA in Finance it is a 5-day visit once a year, with students paying their own travel and hostel stay, subject to availability. The Microtek MBAs describe a campus visit with personality-development sessions and cultural events, priced at ₹10,000 but waived for now. On the Gen AI MBA page, students who take their exams remotely can’t join the immersion.
Student accounts suggest campus time is limited. One Reddit poster says they got at most about five campus days over two years [1]. In a short campus video [2], a speaker describes the visit positively and advises prospective students to see the campus before taking admission. The brochures and pages disagree on whether immersion is 5 or 7 days and whether it is included or optional, so ask for the exact plan and cost in writing.
Seat Cap, Intake and Academic Calendar
- MBA: the web page lists 240 seats. The brochure says classes start 23 January 2027, with first-semester exams in May–June 2027.
- Gen AI MBA: a cohort of 150–240 per session. Registrations are closed, and the page says they’ll reopen for Autumn 2027.
- IIIT Ranchi MBA: Spring 2026-27 intake, with no seat figure published.
- MBA in Finance: Batch 9 (2026/28). The page shows a “75% seats filled” banner.
Placements and Career Support
None of these programs publishes MBA placement outcomes in the materials we reviewed, and with hybrid programs only running since July 2023, there is little graduate data to draw on. What they do state:
- Microtek MBAs: “100% internship and placement support” through an ePlacement cell and a job portal, subject to conditions. The brochure cites 1,000+ hiring companies and 500+ openings a year. The web page says 200+ jobs a month.
- IIIT Ranchi MBA: the same support language. Its placement statistics are for IIIT Ranchi’s B.Tech batches, not this MBA.
- MBA in Finance: no placement claim. The brochure’s salary ranges (₹10–60L+ for roles like investment banking analyst) are market estimates from job portals, and it states that IIT Patna does not offer any employment.
Read these as career services and not job guarantees. If you’re considering the MBA for a career switch, ask for batch-wise outcomes.
What Students Say
Public student feedback on these programs is limited, and these are individual accounts we couldn’t verify. They point in different directions.
- Critical: a Reddit post [1] by a student who says they completed the MBA in 2024–26 reported very easy admission, mostly visiting faculty with little mentoring, at most about five campus days over two years, and no campus-style placement drive, so they found jobs on their own. They called the curriculum reasonable and the IIT name the main upside.
- Balanced: a Quora answer [3] from a working professional who says they graduated in 2026 from the MBA in Supply Chain Management & International Business called it worthwhile for people who want flexibility, the IIT brand and strong academic content. They said it isn’t ideal if you want campus immersion or strong on-campus placements like those at IIMs or IIT’s own MBA.
- Pilot-batch graduate: a woman who says she was in the pilot batch says in a YouTube review [4] that her batch was not promised placement and that most classmates were already employed, so they mainly wanted the degree. She calls the hybrid format a good fit for working professionals, but says someone who isn’t working and mainly wants placements should consider an offline MBA. She adds that outcomes depend on your skills and on choosing a specialization close to your existing background, and that freshers should expect entry-level roles and not a big package. The pilot batch predates today’s programs.
- Upbeat: a second video on the same channel [2] is more positive. The speaker recommends the program, says hybrid students feel like regular students during campus time, and suggests visiting the campus before taking admission. It is short and doesn’t cover fees, placement or curriculum, and the speaker’s relationship to the program isn’t stated.
Two points recur. Students broadly rate the curriculum and flexibility positively, and consistently say placements and campus experience are not the draw. As noted under Placements, none of the programs publishes MBA placement data. TeamLease’s brochure does report more than 1,000 enrolled over eight batches, with work experience ranging from under two years to over ten.
Who Should (and Shouldn’t) Do an IIT Patna MBA?
Much of the debate over online MBAs, such as a Reddit discussion [5] asking why people say “don’t do an online MBA”, comes down to one question: what do you want the degree to do for you? Commenters there repeatedly separate people who want a credential alongside a job from people who want a recruiter-driven career reset. The IIT Patna programs follow the same logic.
It can make sense if you:
- Are already employed and want a master’s alongside your job. Commenters broadly agreed this is where an online MBA works best, mainly for promotions and moves into management within your current field. They described the gains as incremental, not dramatic. Your specialization should build on your current field, since a career switch is the harder case.
- Are a working professional moving toward a leadership role. A self-described 2026 graduate in that position called it worthwhile [3].
- Can’t leave your job or afford a full-time MBA. The total fee here is roughly ₹2.3–4.6 lakh depending on the program, and you keep earning.
- Want a structured credential from an IIT-branded institution without clearing CAT or a similar exam.
- Have a clear use for it, such as an internal promotion that needs a master’s, a move from a technical role into management, or a finance role that matches the MBA in Finance.
- Can protect 24–28 hours a week (the web figure for the Microtek MBAs) for two years.
Think twice if you:
- Want campus-style placements or a recruiter-led career switch. The most common objection in the thread was weak placements and a weak recruiter pipeline, and none of these programs publishes MBA placement outcomes. If your main goal is a placement-led career start, students suggest weighing a full-time or offline MBA [4].
- Expect strong peer networking. Commenters said peer learning is thin online, and some linked cohort quality to entrance exams. These programs don’t use one.
- Could realistically get into a top-ranked full-time MBA. One commenter said an online MBA is a waste if you can still enter an IIM-tier program.
- Plan an academic career. Student accounts conflict on whether the MBA qualifies you for a PhD. One graduate says yes [3], while a commenter elsewhere says no [5]. Confirm with your target PhD program in writing before enrolling.
- Need external discipline. One commenter described losing interest and patience over time in online classes.
- Are a fresher with no work experience. Three of the four programs accept freshers, but commenters said recruiters discount online MBAs when there’s no solid work experience behind them.
Matching the four programs
| If you are… | Look at | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| A working graduate wanting general management | The MBA | Hours, extra fees and credit count |
| A tech professional moving toward AI-led product roles | The Gen AI MBA | The highest fee and a closed intake |
| Price- and time-sensitive | The IIIT Ranchi MBA | Joint-degree wording and whether the offer price still stands |
| Working in finance with 2+ years’ experience | The MBA in Finance | Immersion cost and the “full-time” label |
A reality check on the IIT name
Discussions of IIT MBAs more broadly raise points that apply here too. In a Quora thread [6] on the disadvantages of an MBA from an IIT, contributors said IITs are known mainly for engineering, so their MBAs can be less recognised than those of established business schools, and that IIT MBA alumni bases are comparatively small. One graduate of a regular on-campus IIT MBA (2022–24 batch) said they regretted choosing the program mainly for the IIT name without checking placement outcomes. They advised prospective students to speak with alumni and look at the actual placement data.
These accounts concern full-time, on-campus MBAs and are mostly several years old, so treat them as context and not as evidence about IIT Patna. The practical advice still carries over: ask for outcome data, and talk to alumni before you pay.
Before you decide
- Would you choose this program if a regular MBA were available to you? If not, what’s driving the choice?
- What does the degree need to do within 12 months, and could your employer sponsor it?
- Are you ready to explain it honestly in interviews as a hybrid or online program? Commenters said recruiters often ask about the mode.
Degree Validity and Recognition
IITs grant degrees under their own statutory powers, so “is it UGC approved?” doesn’t apply to an IIT Patna degree in the usual way. The IIIT Ranchi MBA is a joint degree, so check how its certificate reads before using it for anything where the issuing institution matters. For government jobs, PhD admission or study abroad, confirm eligibility with the specific employer or university. Whether the degree opens PhD admission is a recurring question: IIT Patna’s own hub FAQ lists it, and students give different answers, so check the specific program’s eligibility rules.
Check These Before You Pay
- Fee validity: is the early-bird or struck-out price still available, and what are the all-in costs with exam, immersion and convocation fees?
- Weekly hours: the web says 24–28 for the Microtek MBAs and 8–10 for the IIIT Ranchi MBA.
- Credits and curriculum: the sample transcript shows 124 credits and course names that differ from the 84-credit web curriculum.
- Degree wording: ask who signs and whose name appears.
- Exam mode: online proctored or in-person?
- Work-experience rule: the program wording and the web page differ for the Microtek MBAs.
- Immersion: is it 5 or 7 days, mandatory or optional, and is it included in the fee?
- Batch size and outcomes: ask for the actual batch size and how many students from the last batch found jobs or internships through the program’s support. One Reddit poster described a batch of about 450, while the MBA page lists 240 seats.
Get the answers in writing, and ask to be connected with alumni of the program.

Final word
The IIT Patna online MBA is really four programs, and the IIT name is the draw across all of them. They differ more than their names suggest, and brochure and web figures don’t always agree. Compare them on all-in fees, weekly hours, degree wording, placement evidence and what you need the degree to do. It suits working professionals who want a credential alongside a job far better than people hoping for a placement-led career reset. Ask for fees, hours, degree wording, immersion terms and outcome data in writing, and talk to a current student or alumnus before you pay.
