IIT Patna Online Degree (BS in AI & Cybersecurity / CS & Data Analytics): Real IIT Degree? Seats, Fees, Eligibility, Reviews (2026)
Research partner: College Vidya | Data sources: IIT Patna registration page, IIT Patna admissions page and IIT Patna admission brochure
The IIT Patna online degree is a four-year, full-time BS in Artificial Intelligence & Cybersecurity (AICS) or BS in Computer Science & Data Analytics (CSDA). IIT Patna calls it a hybrid programme: live online classes, proctored exams and an optional campus visit, not a self-paced app course. It is run through IIT Patna’s Center for Educational Technology, with Microtek Educational Society named as the official service partner. This guide covers seats, fees, eligibility, placements and what students say, and it separates what IIT Patna publishes from what is only claimed.
One date explains much of what follows. According to IIT Patna’s own registration page, the institute started its hybrid programmes in 2023 (July 2023, going by the institute’s published director’s message). The sources do not give a start year for each programme. A review video says the three-year BSc came first and the four-year BS later [1]. A four-year degree begun in July 2023 could not finish before mid-2027, so no BS cohort has graduated yet, and that is why no BS placement data exists.
Quick Answer: IIT Patna’s online BS is a regular degree programme of an IIT, delivered in hybrid mode with Microtek Educational Society as service partner. Fees come to about ₹4.57 lakh for four years. There are 240 seats per specialization (marked with an asterisk on the official page), and Class 12 Science with 60% is required. Because the hybrid programmes began in 2023, no placement outcome data for the BS exists yet. It suits people studying alongside another degree or job better than people who want it as their only degree.

Seat Cap: 240 Seats Per Specialization
IIT Patna’s admissions page lists 240* seats under AI & Cybersecurity and another 240* under CS & Data Analytics. That is about 480 seats across the two BS programmes. The asterisk points to a footnote we could not read on the page, so we cannot say whether 240 is per intake or per year.
Why a cap may exist. IIT Patna does not state the reason on the pages we read. One likely explanation, based on our own research, is campus immersion capacity: the visit happens alongside end-semester exams, and a campus can only host so many students at once. The institute runs two intakes a year, which fits that picture, but treat it as our reading and not an official explanation.
Context. A local news report on IIT Patna’s hybrid programmes puts enrolment across all programmes at 1,892 in 2023, 5,411 in 2025 and 5,285 in 2026, attributed to an institute official (Patna Press). Those figures cover several programmes, so they cannot be compared directly with the 240-seat BS cap.
What it means for you. If you want a specific specialization, apply early in the intake window and confirm with the admissions team whether seats are still open. A fixed cap also means you should read the ‘valid score’ wording in the eligibility section carefully before assuming admission is automatic.
Is the IIT Patna Online Degree Real? Where Microtek Fits
The short answer is that this is a regular degree from an IIT, delivered through a hybrid model with a service partner. IITs are Institutes of National Importance with their own degree-granting powers under the Institutes of Technology Act, so they sit outside UGC. ‘Is it UGC approved?’ is the wrong question for all four online IIT degrees we compare. The admissions page describes the programme as a regular degree with IIT degree and alumni status.
The part that confuses people is Microtek. IIT Patna’s Continuing Education Programme page lists Microtek Educational Society as Service Partner for its undergraduate hybrid programmes, including the BS in AICS and CSDA and the BS-MS programmes. The fee account in the brochure also carries Microtek’s name. This is the same kind of arrangement as IIT Jodhpur’s Futurense partnership, which we explain in our IIT Jodhpur article.
What each side does, as far as public information shows:
- IIT Patna: awards the degree and runs academics through its Center for Educational Technology. The institute’s faculty are named as the teachers.
- Microtek Educational Society: acts as service partner. The pages we read do not list its exact duties. Service partners in these models usually handle delivery logistics, student support and admissions operations, but confirm this with the institute.
What students allege. Some Reddit users call the programme a scam. An enrolled student who defends it says Microtek is a partner but the degree is issued by IIT Patna and taught by IIT faculty [2]. Other commenters allege that the partner effectively runs the programme and question where fees go. We could not verify these allegations, and we are not repeating anything about named individuals or commissions.
The fair criticism is about disclosure. The admissions page and brochure lead with ‘IIT Patna’ and show Microtek mainly in payment details, while the CEP page names it openly. Before you pay, ask the admissions team in writing about the partner’s role and what the final degree certificate carries. The brochure’s sample degree is marked illustrative, so we cannot confirm the wording.
Not confirmed in the sources: whether the BS qualifies for GATE or JAM. Ask IIT Patna in writing before you rely on it.
AI & Cybersecurity vs CS & Data Analytics: Which One to Pick
The first two years are largely shared: mathematics, foundations of computer science, Python and data structures, design of algorithms, machine learning techniques, databases and web development, per the programme structure. The two specializations then split.
| BS in AI & Cybersecurity | BS in CS & Data Analytics | |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | AI, machine learning, cybersecurity and ethical hacking | Data analytics, algorithms, databases and computational theory |
| Specialization courses | Foundations of Cyber Security, Cyber Security Essentials, Computer and Network Security, Big Data Security | Statistics for Data Science, Advanced Machine Learning Techniques, Big Data Analytics |
| Career direction | Security analyst, secure AI systems, ethical hacking paths | Data analyst, data science and software roles |
| Best for | Students drawn to security and AI risk | Students who want a broader data and CS base |
Both include a mandatory 12-credit summer industry project after semester 4, capstone projects, and elective choices in the later years, with a minimum of 165 credits listed. If you are unsure, CSDA is the broader and safer pick because its coursework overlaps most with general software and data roles. Pick AICS only if security is a real interest.
Electives and the semester-1 course list differ between the registration page (Generative AI, LLMs, Graph Machine Learning, Data Engineering, Cloud Computing) and the admissions page. Check the current syllabus with the admissions team.
Programme Structure, Exit Options and the 5-Year BS-MS
The programme is modular. According to the registration page, you can exit after year 1 with a Foundation Certificate, after year 2 with a Diploma, after year 3 with a BSc degree and after year 4 with the BS. IIT Patna’s eligibility page describes its hybrid programmes as having an ‘entry, exit and re-entry option’. It gives no procedure, so ask how re-entry works and how long a gap is allowed. The brochure also mentions studying two programmes at the same time and a credit bank.
The BS-MS route. IIT Patna also offers a five-year, ten-semester BS-MS in the same two specializations, listed at ₹5,64,000 in total. We have not covered it in depth here.
The BSc-to-BS upgrade. IIT Patna’s BSc (Hons) in CSDA came first. Students who complete it at IIT Patna with a CPI of 6.5 or higher can upgrade to the BS in the fourth year, as the registration page describes. This is only for IIT Patna BSc CSDA students, not for outsiders.
Eligibility and Admission Process
The official eligibility is Class 12 in the Science stream with at least 60% cumulative marks, plus one of the following: a valid score or rank in a national or state entrance such as JEE (Main/Advanced), NEET, CUET, BITSAT or KVPY/NTSE or state exams, a valid SAT or BMAT score, or a pass in IIT Patna’s own IITP-SAT, followed by a virtual interview (registration page). CUET scores are on the official list. Students from non-Science streams are not eligible, which makes Patna the most restrictive of the four IITs.
What ‘valid’ means is not defined. No minimum score or percentile appears on the pages we read. An enrolled student says admission needs only that you have attempted one of the listed exams, with Class 12 marks and stream being the real gatekeepers [3]. A review creator makes the same point about the missing definition [1], and one commenter on that video claims about a 30 percentile cutoff. These are student reports, not published rules. Confirm the current cutoff with the admissions team in writing.
The brochure carries an age limit and a Class 12 pass deadline dated 2025. These may be out of date, so verify them for your intake.
Fees: What the IIT Patna Online Degree Costs
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Programme fee | ₹56,400 per semester, so ₹4,51,200 for 8 semesters |
| Application/registration fee | ₹2,800, non-refundable. The admissions page says it includes the immersion fee and semester examination fee |
| Degree and convocation fee | ₹3,000, one-time |
| Alumni fee | ₹6,000, marked optional |
| Estimated total | About ₹4.57 lakh (₹4.63 lakh with the optional alumni fee) |
All figures come from the admissions page, the registration page and the brochure. The brochure quotes a zero-cost EMI of about ₹9,400 a month. Government scholarships are mentioned with conditions, and an enrolled student says there is no institute scholarship for this programme [3]. Unlike IIT Madras, no income-based fee waiver is described. Third-party websites quote different totals, so use the official numbers and check them for your intake.
How Learning Works: Classes, Exams and Campus Immersion
- Classes: live, interactive online classes. A student says this differs from IIT Madras’s mostly recorded lectures [4].
- Time: IIT Patna states 24–28 hours of study a week.
- Attendance and marks: 75% attendance is needed. Assessment weights are assignments 30%, quizzes 20% and the end-semester exam 50%.
- Exams: all assessments are proctored online. Students may sit end-semester exams remotely in proctored safe-browser mode.
- Campus immersion: optional, about 10 days with the end-semester exams. Students who take the exam remotely are not entitled to join it, per the admissions page.
Immersion has changed over time. A student from an early batch describes a 15-day immersion after semester 1 and a 5-day one after semester 2, with the second round’s exams held online because of summer heat [5]. That interview is about two years old, so treat it as one early cohort’s experience, not today’s terms.
The expectation gap. An enrolled student says the pitch stressed campus immersion but they never had time to attend [4]. Accounts of library, hostel and campus access also conflict. Official terms tie the visit to exams and prior appointment, so do not count on regular campus access.
Study alongside another degree. The official features include concurrent study in two programmes. The positive enrolled-student voices we found are all doing it next to a regular degree.
Placements and Internships: What Is and Isn’t Published
Launch years matter here. The hybrid programmes began in July 2023. The four-year BS cohorts have not graduated yet, so there is no BS placement data to show. The brochure refers to a hybrid-programme convocation, so graduates exist at the three-year BSc level, but no outcome data for them is published either.
What IIT Patna claims. The admissions page advertises ‘100% internship and placement support’ and a ’56 Lakh highest salary reported till 2026′ (admissions page). Read these carefully:
- ‘Support’ is not an outcome. 100% support does not say how many students got internships or jobs, where, or at what pay. No internship length or stipend is stated.
- The ₹56 lakh figure covers several programmes. The report behind it says 44 students from the 2026 cohort got packages above ₹42 lakh, with a maximum of ₹56 lakh, across MTech, MBA, BBA and BSc CSDA. It attributes this to an institute official, names no companies and shows no methodology (Patna Press). It is not a BS figure.
- The brochure’s placement statistics are not hybrid data. Its 91.26% placed, ₹23.09 LPA average and ₹82.05 LPA highest are IIT Patna’s regular campus placement numbers, per the brochure.
What critics say. A review creator says he does not accept the 56 LPA and 100% internship claims and notes that the 56 LPA carries a ‘across all programmes’ qualifier [1]. Another video, by an independent presenter, alleges that the 100% internship and ₹56 lakh claims for the 2026 BSc batch are not genuine and that interns were concentrated in one company [6]. We have not seen documents backing either side, and we could not verify these allegations. Equally, IIT Patna has not published a breakdown that would let anyone check its claims.
Questions to ask before joining:
- How many hybrid students got internships last year, in which companies, and what did they earn?
- Are the internships paid, and for how long?
- What share of each batch completes the programme?
- Is the placement support open to BS students on the same terms as campus students?
What Students Say About the IIT Patna Online Degree
Student voice here is thin and mixed, and most of it comes from one early cohort. We read Reddit threads and YouTube videos. Several comments were abusive or unverifiable, and we left those out.
Who is behind each source:
- [2] is an r/IITPatnaCampus thread by an enrolled student defending the programme; the account has since been deleted.
- [4] is an r/IITPatnaCampus thread where enrolled students give mixed views.
- [1] is a review by a creator whose channel links to College Vidya, so treat it as partner-linked.
- [5] is the same creator’s interview with a BSc CSDA student, about two years old.
- [3] is a video where an enrolled student answers viewers’ questions.
- [6] is a video by an independent presenter questioning the placement claims.
Value Compared With IIT Madras
One enrolled student regrets joining and says online-proctored exams mean everyone ends up with a high CGPA, while IIT Madras holds exams at centres and so carries more weight [4]. That is an opinion, and no data backs it. Another enrolled student, doing it next to a regular BTech, calls it a good, cheap opportunity if you can manage your time, and says to choose IIT Madras if you are not doing it as a second degree [4].
Admission, Immersion and Trust
Students describe admission as easy and Class 12 marks as the main filter [3, 5]. They also say immersion is not mandatory [3]. A student who chose Patna over IIT Madras did so because the campus is in her home state of Bihar [5]. A review creator notes this regional pull [1]. On trust, Reddit commenters are split between ‘it is a scam’ and ‘it is a partner model with an IIT degree’ [2].
What Nobody Has Shown
No source shows placement outcomes, completion rates or the number of students who finish. A few commenters throw out figures, but they do not agree with each other or with the launch timeline, so we have not used them. Weigh the evidence with three limits in mind: most voices come from one early cohort, several sources are linked to each other, and people who are unhappy are more likely to post.

Who Should and Shouldn’t Choose IIT Patna
It may suit you if:
- You are studying a regular BTech or another degree and want a second, IIT-branded degree. This is the pattern among the happiest enrolled students we found.
- You are a working professional who can give 24–28 hours a week and wants to upskill in AI, cybersecurity or data.
- You are from Bihar or nearby, where the optional campus visit is easier.
- You have a Science stream Class 12 with 60% or more.
Think twice if:
- This would be your only degree and you are counting on campus-style placements. None are published for these programmes.
- You are from Commerce or Arts. You are not eligible.
- You expect regular campus access, a hostel or an in-person IIT experience. The immersion is optional, short and tied to exams.
- You want income-based fee waivers.
Five checks before you pay:
- Learning experience: live online classes with an optional visit, or something fully self-paced?
- Delivery: IIT Patna with a named service partner. Ask in writing what Microtek does.
- Placement track record: ask for actual internship and job outcomes for BS students, not support claims.
- Career fit: choose AICS or CSDA by what you want to do, not by the IIT name.
- Recognition: confirm GATE, JAM, MBA or study-abroad eligibility directly for your target.

Frequently Asked Questions
IIT Patna online degree real hai?
Yes. IIT Patna’s online BS is a regular degree programme delivered in hybrid mode. According to IIT Patna’s official pages, Microtek Educational Society is the service partner. IITs are not under the UGC because they have their own degree-awarding powers. Even so, before you pay, confirm in writing with the admissions team what the partner’s role is and what the degree certificate will say.
Microtek ka kya role hai?
IIT Patna’s Continuing Education Programme page lists Microtek Educational Society as the Service Partner. Its exact duties are not described in detail on the public pages. Partners like this typically handle delivery, student support and admission operations, but it is better to confirm this with IIT Patna.
IIT Patna BS mein kitni seats hain?
The official admissions page lists 240 seats against each specialization, which means 240 each in AI & Cybersecurity and in CS & Data Analytics. The figure carries an asterisk whose footnote we could not read on the page, so it is unclear whether 240 applies per intake or for the whole year. It is wise to apply early and ask the admissions team about seat availability.
Kya IIT Patna online degree mein cutoff hai?
The official pages only say “valid score/rank” and do not state a minimum score or percentile. Some students say that simply attempting the exam is enough and that the real filters are your Class 12 marks and the Science stream. These are student reports, not an official rule, so ask the admissions team for the current cutoff in writing.
Kya CUET score se admission mil sakta hai?
Yes, CUET is named in the official eligibility list. You need at least 60% in Class 12 Science along with a valid score in CUET, JEE, NEET, BITSAT or a state entrance exam. Applicants without a valid score have to take the IITP-SAT, followed by a virtual interview.
Kya BTech ke saath IIT Patna online degree kar sakte hain?
The official features mention the option of pursuing two programmes together. Enrolled students who give positive feedback are mostly doing it alongside a regular degree. The programme takes about 24 to 28 hours a week and needs 75% attendance, so managing your time is essential.
Kya campus jaana padega?
No, the campus immersion is optional. It lasts about 10 days and is held alongside the end-semester exams. A student who takes the exam in remotely proctored mode cannot take part in the immersion. The immersion length was different for early batches, so check the current terms.
IIT Patna online degree ki total fees kitni hai?
The programme fee is ₹56,400 per semester, which is ₹4,51,200 for 8 semesters. Adding the ₹2,800 application fee and the ₹3,000 degree and convocation fee brings the total to roughly ₹4.57 lakh. The ₹6,000 alumni fee is optional. Zero-cost EMI is mentioned at about ₹9,400 per month.
Kya scholarship milti hai?
Government scholarships are mentioned with conditions. According to one enrolled student, the institute offers no scholarship for this programme. An income-based fee waiver like the one at IIT Madras is also not mentioned here. Confirm your eligibility with the admissions team.
IIT Patna online degree mein placement milta hai?
No placement data has been published for the BS yet, because the hybrid programmes started in July 2023 and the 4-year BS batches have not graduated. IIT Patna promises “100% internship and placement support”, but support does not mean a guaranteed job. Ask for actual internship and job outcomes before you join.
Kya IIT Patna BS GATE ya JAM ke liye valid hai?
We could not confirm this from official sources. If you plan to take GATE or JAM, get the eligibility confirmed in writing by IIT Patna. Do not rely only on social media or students’ comments.
Final Word: Is the IIT Patna Online Degree Worth It?
The IIT Patna online degree is a real IIT programme with a clear structure, a published fee and a lower entry bar than the on-campus route, which makes it a reasonable second degree or upskilling option. It is a weaker choice as your only degree, because placement outcomes, completion rates and the partner’s role are not publicly documented. Ask the admissions team the questions above, get the answers in writing and compare it with the other three IITs before you pay.
Disclaimer: This article is based on publicly available information and on student comments we could not independently verify. Fees, seats, eligibility and programme terms can change, so confirm them with IIT Patna before you apply. This is not financial or legal advice.
