IIT Madras Online BS in Data Science & Applications: Is It Worth ₹4.5 Lakh?
Research partner: College Vidya | Data sources: IIT Madras BS program reports
Quick answer: The IIT Madras online BS in Data Science & Applications is a genuine IIT Madras degree, and the curriculum is rigorous. The full BS costs ₹3.86–4.5 lakh, paid in stages. Most working graduates earn ₹5–15 LPA, not the ₹50+ LPA associated with IIT BTech placements. It is worth it if you want real data science skills and can commit 4–5 years of disciplined study. It is not worth it if you are mainly chasing the “IIT” tag.
Before you invest lakhs of rupees and 4–5 years, you need answers to a few honest questions. Is it worth the fees? Will it get you a job? What salary can you expect? Is it comparable to an IIT Madras BTech? This guide answers them using IIT Madras’s own published data.

What is the IIT Madras online BS degree, and why was it launched?
IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti has described these programs as part of a vision to democratize access to IIT-quality education for learners from every corner of the country, without the traditional constraints of JEE. In a world where Data Science and AI fundamentals matter for almost every career, that is the idea behind the program. It launched in 2020, and the first batch started in January 2021.
- Who can apply: Anyone who has completed Class 12 or an accepted equivalent, from any stream (Science, Commerce or Arts). This includes a 3-year recognised diploma or Class 12 through NIOS open schooling. Students who have appeared for their Class 11 final exams can also apply for the qualifier. IIT Madras expects applicants to have studied Mathematics and English in Class 10.
- Age limit: None. The official site says current learners range from 17 to 81 years old.
- Demand: In 2021 alone, the program received over 50,000 applications. IIT Madras has since added three more online BS programs: Electronic Systems, Aeronautics and Space Technology, and Management and Data Science. All four are listed on its non-campus BS programmes page.
Is it really IIT Madras degree or just an online certificate?
Yes, it is a real IIT Madras degree. IIT Madras says the curriculum, rigour and quality are on par with its regular degree programmes. The Senate-approved BSc/BS degree also gives you IIT Madras alumni status.
That does not make it easy. Getting in, surviving the coursework and finishing the degree are all challenging.
IIT Madras BS Data Science admission process: Kaise milta hai admission?
There are two entry routes.
1. Regular entry (Qualifier Process). You get 4 weeks of coursework in four Foundation courses: English I, Mathematics I, Statistics I and Computational Thinking. In simple terms, you first study the material through lectures and weekly assignments, then take an in-person, 4-hour qualifier exam covering all four courses. The exam is not online.
2. JEE entry. If you are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced, you can skip the Qualifier Process. You fill in the application form, pay the ₹4,000 admission fee and submit proof of eligibility.
The degree has three terms every year: January, May and September.
Who is studying here today? The official site reports 36,000+ students currently studying. Over 20,000 of them are pursuing another degree alongside this one, and 3,000+ are working professionals.
How many students complete IIT Madras Online BS Data Science Degree? The truth about the “99% dropout rate”
According to IIT Madras’s program report, 69,280 students have started the degree, but only 623 have completed the full BS. That is under 1%.
When we first saw this number, it looked like a 99% dropout rate. Then we checked the timeline. The program began in 2021, and the full BS takes 4–5 years. A student who joined in 2023 or 2024 cannot have finished by 2026, even if they are perfectly on track. So this is not a dropout rate. Many of these students are still moving through the program.
Dropouts do exist, though. The funnel below shows how the numbers shrink at each level.
| Stage | Students |
|---|---|
| Applications (first-time; 2.5 lakh+ including re-applications) | ~2 lakh |
| Qualified for admission | 83,000+ |
| Actually started the program | 69,280 |
| Completed Foundation level (Jan 2021–Sep 2025) | 25,330 |
| Completed both Diplomas | 2,728 |
| Completed BSc | 1,424 |
| Completed BS | 623 |

How does the program work? A 4-level ladder
The program has 6 levels in total. For the BS degree you complete the first 4. The other 2 are optional and lead to a PG Diploma and an MTech in AI & ML. Think of it as a ladder where you can exit at every stage with a qualification and certificate.
Level 1: Foundation (8 courses, 32 credits). You study Mathematics for Data Science I and II, Statistics for Data Science I and II, Computational Thinking, English I and II, and Programming in Python. You must complete all 8 before moving to the Diploma level.
Level 2: Diplomas (Programming and Data Science).
- Programming: databases, data structures and algorithms, Java, and web application development, with two projects.
- Data Science: Machine Learning Foundations, Techniques and Practice, Business Data Management and Tools in Data Science. You then choose a Business Analytics track or an Introduction to Deep Learning and Generative AI track.
After both Diplomas, you have 86 credits including Foundation.
Level 3: BSc. This adds 28 credits (114 in total). You can exit here with a BSc in Programming and Data Science from IIT Madras, or continue.
Level 4: BS degree. The core courses are Software Engineering, Software Testing, AI: Search Methods for Problem Solving, Deep Learning and Strategies for Professional Growth. You also choose from a large pool of electives, including Large Language Models, NLP, MLOps and Mathematical Foundations of Generative AI. This takes the total to 142 credits.
The workload is heavy
This is not a normal four-year college experience.
- Each year has 3 terms, and each term has 12 weeks of coursework.
- You can register for up to 4 courses per term.
- IIT Madras estimates about 10 hours per course per week at Foundation level and 15 hours at Diploma and Degree levels.
- Each course has weekly online assignments, monthly in-person quizzes and an in-person end-term exam.
With four courses, that works out to roughly 40 hours a week at Foundation level and up to 60 hours at Diploma/Degree level. This is not a light side course.
IIT Madras BS Data Science placements: Job milegi ya nahi?
IIT Madras publishes two separate sets of placement data, and you need to read them separately.
1. Self-secured jobs and internships
These are students who found opportunities on their own and later reported in a survey that the degree helped. In the January 2026 term alone, students self-secured 1,115 internships and 379 jobs, according to IIT Madras’s Career Choices Report.
Of the 345 students who reported salaries for new jobs in that term:
- 35 reported more than ₹20 LPA
- 54 reported ₹10–20 LPA
- 256 reported less than ₹10 LPA
IIT Madras notes that the much larger salaries mostly belong to working professionals with many years of experience.
2. Placements through the IIT Madras Industry Interaction Cell (IIC)
In September 2025, 62 companies advertised jobs through IIC, 58 students applied and 49 secured jobs. For IIC jobs, the reported mean salary is ₹7.5 LPA, the median is ₹6 LPA and the highest is ₹20 LPA.
Batch 2025 outcomes
IIT Madras’s Batch 2025 summary covers 545 students who completed a BSc or the full BS. Of these, 343 are working.
| Salary slab | Graduates |
|---|---|
| Below ₹5 LPA | 34 |
| ₹5–10 LPA | 110 |
| ₹10–15 LPA | 73 |
| ₹15–25 LPA | 38 |
| ₹25–50 LPA | 25 |
| Above ₹50 LPA | 8 |
| Preferred not to share | 55 |
Of the 288 who shared their salary, 183 (about 64%) earn ₹5–15 LPA. 33 graduates, about 1 in 10 of all 343 working graduates, earn above ₹25 LPA.
One caveat matters here. 435 of the 545 were dual-degree students or working professionals, so many were already employed or experienced, and not all salaries come from the degree alone. The batch found work at 245 unique companies, including Google, IBM, Amazon, Deloitte, PwC, EY, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase.
How does this compare with IIT Madras BTech?
It doesn’t, and you should not expect it to. BTech CSE at IIT Madras recorded an average package of ₹53.2 LPA (median ₹46 LPA) in the 2024–25 placement season, per the Career Pathway Centre annual report. A review by Neural DeepLearn Academy makes the same point: the IIT Madras name alone does not guarantee a high-paying job, and recruiters look at your skills and projects.
What do IIT Madras online BS Data Science students actually say?
IIT Madras features several success stories. Sukaniya K joined NatWest Group after a 4-year career gap, Shabbir joined PwC, and Hardik joined Abacus Insights. IIT Madras itself is the largest single employer in the Batch 2025 list, with 15 graduates working there.
Aditya Goyal shares his experience with the IIT Madras BS degree.
Independent discussions on Reddit (1, 2, 3, 4) and Quora (1, 2) paint a more mixed picture. Early on, many people questioned the program’s credibility, but sentiment has improved. Recent graduates say the curriculum is well designed and the projects give an edge in interviews. Others say the coursework is excellent but you should not count on placements.
IIT Madras’s Director has also acknowledged that admission here is easier than JEE Advanced, but the degree is intentionally hard to complete. Unlike many online degrees, it teaches concepts and fundamentals in real depth.
Do IIT Madras online BS Data Science students get IIT campus experience?
A common worry is that an online degree means no student life. IIT Madras’s Student Life page describes a hybrid model. Every student joins one of 12 Houses, regional chapters organise meetups around exams, and 30+ student-run clubs and societies cover coding, robotics, finance, debate, music, sports and more. The flagship fest, Paradox, is held every June as a four-day event on the IIT Madras campus, with online editions in the monsoon and winter terms. IIT Madras says 70+ events and 5,000+ students are expected in 2026.
To set expectations: this is a few days on campus a year plus online and regional activities, not a full-time residential experience. Still, it gives learners a real peer network.
Higher studies after the BS Data Science degree
The official site says 850+ students have secured admission to Master’s or PhD programs in India and abroad. IIT Madras’s Career Choices Report shows the following for the latest four terms (January 2025 to January 2026):
- 53 admissions to universities abroad. The Batch 2025 summary lists UMass, NYU and the University of Sydney among them.
- 79 admissions to IITs, IISc, IISER, IIITs and IIMs
- 219 admissions to other Indian institutes
Many of these students were dual-degree students, so this does not mean the BS automatically gets you into an IIT or a foreign university. It does improve your chances. On the exam side, 20+ BS students ranked in the top 100 of the GATE Data Science and AI paper in 2024, and three BS students took ranks 1, 7 and 10 in GATE 2025.
IIT Madras BS Data Science fees: Kitna kharcha aayega?
The total fee for the full BS is ₹3.86–4.5 lakh, depending on the electives you choose. You do not pay it all at once. You pay each term only for the courses you register for.
| Milestone | Total fee |
|---|---|
| Foundation only | ₹48,000 |
| Foundation + one Diploma | ₹1.29 lakh |
| Foundation + both Diplomas | ₹2.10 lakh |
| BSc degree | ₹2.86–3.10 lakh |
| BS degree | ₹3.86–4.50 lakh |
This is the revised fee structure for students joining from the January 2026 term. Students who joined up to September 2025 are on an earlier fee structure. If you stop at an earlier level, you do not pay the remaining fees. For comparison, private colleges charge ₹7–10 lakh for a BSc in Data Science, so this is roughly half.
Hidden costs to know about
- In-person exams. Every quiz and exam is held at a designated centre, so you cannot take them from home.
- Failing means repeating the course. If you fail a course, you have to repeat it and pay the full course fee again. There is one exception: if you completed everything but missed only the end-term exam, you can repeat just that exam for ₹1,000 (Foundation) or ₹2,000 (Diploma/Degree).
Fee waivers
IIT Madras provides fee support based on category and family income:
- Family income above ₹1 lakh and up to ₹5 lakh: 50% (General/OBC with EWS or OBC-NCL certificate)
- Family income up to ₹1 lakh: 75%
- SC/ST and PwD learners get support at higher income levels too (50% even above ₹5 LPA)
Diploma and Degree students claiming a waiver must submit income documents for verification, and waivers do not apply to learners outside India. The official site says 2,000+ students currently study for free, and it lists CSR scholarships for disadvantaged learners. You may or may not qualify, so do not build your plan around a waiver.
Time is a cost too
IIT Madras’s FAQ says the full program can take 3–6 years, and a part-time learner typically finishes in 4–5. The full path through MTech can run up to 8 years.
If you are doing it alongside another full-time degree, be realistic about the workload. It can be a great addition, though. If you are studying BTech Computer Science, this program adds skills and credentials on top. And if you exit at Foundation or Diploma level, you do not end up with only a Class 12 qualification.
What type of people are pursuing this degree? Kaun log yeh degree kar rahe hain?
IIT Madras’s program report groups students into four types:
- Dual-degree students: pursuing another degree at a regular college in parallel
- Standalone students: doing this as their primary degree
- Working professionals
- Others, such as people restarting their careers
Final verdict: Should you do the IIT Madras BS in Data Science?
There is no flat yes or no. Ask yourself these questions honestly:
- Can you stay motivated with no classroom or attendance pressure?
- Do you want to learn data science, or just get the “IIT” tag? Recruiters look at skills and projects, not only the college name.
- Do you have 4–5 years of patience for an online degree?
- Does ₹4.5 lakh fit your budget? Fee waivers exist, but you may not qualify.
- What is your end goal, a job or higher studies? IIT Madras has real numbers for both paths, as shown above.
If most of your answers are yes, this degree can be a strong, affordable route into data science. If you are mainly after a guaranteed high-paying job through the IIT name, think twice.
