IIT Guwahati Online BSc (Hons) Data Science & AI: Fees, Eligibility, Coursera Model & Honest Review
Research partner: College Vidya | Data sources: IIT Guwahati programme page and Coursera listing
Search interest in the IIT Guwahati online BSc in Data Science & AI has jumped sharply over the past year, and the questions behind that interest are very consistent. Is it a real IIT degree or “just a Coursera course”? How hard is the qualifier? What will it actually cost? And is it better than IIT Madras’s online BS?
This guide answers those questions using IIT Guwahati’s own programme pages, the Coursera listing, and what enrolled students have said publicly. One thing first: this is a BSc (Hons) from IIT Guwahati’s online programme, not a BTech, and not the same as IIT Madras’s BS.
Quick Answer: This is a real IIT Guwahati degree, delivered online on Coursera, with a total fee of ₹3,78,900, about 18–20 hours of effort a week, four exit points, and optional campus immersion. It is more AI-focused than IIT Madras’s BS, and students describe it as more structured and less intense. The trade-offs are limited social interaction, no conventional campus placements and, for students who do not need to qualify via JEE Advanced, a qualifier to clear first.

Is IIT Guwahati Online Degree Real or Fake?
Yes. The BSc (Hons) is offered by IIT Guwahati’s own Mehta Family School of Data Science and AI, and the degree is conferred by IIT Guwahati. Coursera is the delivery platform: it hosts the classes and the learning environment, but it does not award the degree. The programme FAQ says the degree has the same status as on-campus degrees, and physical certificates are awarded at the IIT Guwahati convocation.
The teaching comes mainly from IIT Guwahati faculty, with industry experts alongside. IIT Guwahati said in April 2025 that more than 1,700 students from 21 countries were enrolled.
Two honest limits. First, this is not a residential BTech, and it should not be sold as one. Second, whether a foreign university will accept it for a Master’s is decided by that university, so check the specific university’s rules before you count on it.
Eligibility: Who Can Apply?
The baseline is Class 12 or equivalent with at least 60% aggregate. Diploma holders can apply if their diploma is equivalent and they meet the 60% mark.
Admission Process: How the Qualifier Works
There are two routes.
- Direct admission: if you are eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced) in any year, you skip the Mathematics Essentials course and the qualifier.
- Standard route: complete the online Mathematics Essentials course, then take the qualifier. The qualifier is 2 hours, 80 questions, +1 for each correct answer and no negative marking, and it is proctored online.
IIT Guwahati does not publish a pass rate, so there is no honest way to call it “easy” or “hard”. The course is the preparation for the test, so treat it as such. Assessments need a PC or laptop with a working webcam and the latest Google Chrome, plus a stable internet connection. Whether a failed attempt can be repeated, and at what cost, is not stated in the official material I found, so ask the admissions office before you pay.
Fees: What Is the Total Cost?
The official total for the full four years is ₹3,78,900, subject to revision. It is built from a ₹50,000 admission fee plus ₹1,100 per credit across 299 credits. Because you pay per credit as you take courses, you can see the cost at each exit point:
| Exit point | Credits | Cumulative fee |
|---|---|---|
| Advanced Certificate (Year 1) | 80 | ₹1,38,000 |
| Diploma (Year 2) | 159 | ₹2,24,900 |
| BSc (Year 3) | 229 | ₹3,01,900 |
| BSc (Hons) (Year 4) | 299 | ₹3,78,900 |
Other costs to plan for:
- Application fee of ₹1,000 (non-refundable).
- ₹3,000 for the Mathematics Essentials course and qualifier, if you are not applying via JEE Advanced eligibility.
- A ₹6,000 continuation fee for a term in which you take zero credits.
- Travel and hostel if you choose campus immersion.
Why do other websites quote ₹3,28,900 or ₹3,49,000? The first is simply 299 credits × ₹1,100, which leaves out the ₹50,000 admission fee; the second appears to be an older figure. Use the official total.
Fee waivers: the programme FAQ says there is currently no financial assistance in the form of scholarships or waivers. If you have heard otherwise, ask admissions for it in writing.
Curriculum, Credits and the Four Exit Points
The programme moves from foundations to specialised AI courses. Coursera’s launch announcement lists generative AI, deep learning, computer vision and data mining among the specialised subjects, and IIT Guwahati’s 2025 release mentions tools such as Jupyter Notebook, RStudio and VS Code. From Year 3 there are 18 credits of internships and projects, and Year 4 includes a 36-credit capstone.
The exit structure is the safety net. You can leave with an Advanced Certificate after one year, a Diploma after two, a BSc after three, or complete the BSc (Hons) in four. Students who exit at the Certificate, Diploma or BSc stage can rejoin at the appropriate stage after a one-year gap. Given that online programmes are known for high dropout, this is a genuine advantage over an all-or-nothing degree.
Exams: Online or at a Centre?
Online proctored exams are one reason some students prefer this programme to IIT Madras, where exams are taken at physical centres. That said, the official position has a wrinkle: exams through Year 2 are online and proctored, but after Year 2 summative assessments can be either online or offline. Do not assume the whole degree can be completed without ever travelling.
Campus Immersion and the AI Confluence
The campus part is optional. Students can attend up to 4 weeks of immersion across a maximum of four visits. There is no extra programme fee, but you pay for hostel accommodation and travel. Immersion covers meetings with faculty, practical training and internship discussions.
IIT Guwahati also runs an annual AI Confluence for its online BSc students. The January 2026 edition, on 6–7 January, drew about 400 students to campus for lectures, poster presentations, an AI film-making challenge, an inventathon and a panel on entrepreneurship. It is the closest thing the programme has to a campus fest for online students, similar in spirit to IIT Madras’s Paradox.
What Students Are Saying
Public student feedback on this programme is limited, and what exists is mostly positive. Some reviewers also earn from affiliate links, so read reviews with that in mind. The sources below are videos by enrolled students and reviewers.
Sources: [1] podcast with a current student; [2] 2024 interview with a second-year student; [3] independent review that includes a student doing both IITG and IITM; [4] a working professional’s account.
What students like
- More AI focus. One student chose IIT Guwahati over IIT Madras partly because the course leans more towards AI, which she saw as more in demand, while IIT Madras leans more towards data science [2].
- Online proctored exams. The same student liked not having to travel to a physical centre for exams [2]. Remember the Year 3–4 caveat above.
- Structured lectures. A student pursuing both programmes described IIT Guwahati’s lectures as much more organised and structured than IIT Madras’s, which he said tend to be long and intense, and linked this to Coursera’s involvement [3].
- Campus immersion. A current student named the immersion as a highlight of the programme [1].
What students find hard
- Limited social interaction. The same current student flagged the lack of social interaction as a challenge [1].
- Self-discipline. The second-year student advised anyone considering an online programme to check honestly that they are disciplined and self-motivated before enrolling [2].
- Workload versus IIT Madras. The student doing both said IIT Madras’s BS is “hands down” more intensive [3]. That is one person’s view, not a measured comparison, and IIT Guwahati still asks for about 18–20 hours a week.
- Early-batch onboarding. Viewer comments under the 2024 interview [2] include complaints about delayed lectures and unclear schedules right after admission. These come from an early batch and I could not confirm whether they persist.
- Placement data. As of that 2024 interview, no placement or internship data was available yet [2].
The programme also attracts mid-career learners: one student describes joining after a 20-year career in finance across six countries [4].
Placements: What to Expect
The programme does not offer conventional on-campus recruitment. What it does offer is career support through the IIT Guwahati Online Career Placement Cell and Coursera Hiring Solutions, including mock interviews, resume guidance and technical preparation. I could not find published placement statistics for the online BSc, so anyone quoting a placement percentage for it deserves scepticism. Your outcome will depend heavily on your projects, internships and skills.
This is also a young programme. IIT Guwahati announced the online BSc (Hons) in July 2023 and the first batch began classes in October 2023, so the first batch has not yet completed the full four-year degree. That is the main reason no placement record has been published. We hope IIT Guwahati publishes placement data as the programme matures and its first graduates enter the job market.
Can You Do It Alongside an Offline Degree?
Many readers want to do this alongside a regular college degree. IIT Guwahati’s 2023 launch coverage lists students pursuing parallel degrees among those the programme is open to, along with working professionals and career changers. The practical constraint is time: 18–20 hours a week on top of a full-time degree is a real load, and exams need a webcam-equipped computer. If you are unsure, take the first-year Certificate as a low-risk test.
IIT Guwahati vs IIT Madras: Which One is Better?
| IIT Guwahati BSc (Hons) | IIT Madras BS | |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Data Science & AI, more AI-leaning | Data Science and Applications |
| Lectures | Coursera; recorded plus live sessions, described by a student as more structured [3] | Described by the same student as long and intense [3] |
| Exams | Online proctored to Year 2, then online or offline | Physical exam centres [2] |
| Student view on workload | Lighter, more structured | “Hands down” more intensive [3] |
If you did not clear IIT Madras’s qualifier, IIT Guwahati is a reasonable alternative, but choose it because the course fits you, not because it is a fallback. For a fuller side-by-side, see our 4-way comparison of IIT Madras, Guwahati, Patna and Jodhpur online degrees.
Who Should Join (and Who Shouldn’t)
A good fit: Class 12 graduates who want an IIT-branded route into data science and AI; working professionals who can commit about 18–20 hours a week; students who want to add a technical degree alongside another course of study and can manage the workload.
Think twice if: you need on-campus placements; you want a rich campus social life; you tend to lose momentum without external structure; or you plan to count on this for foreign university admission without checking each university’s rules.
Admission windows change. IIT Guwahati lists applications for its January 2027 intake as running from 20 August to 30 September 2026, with classes from 4 January 2027, while the 2026–27 September intake closed its applications on 30 April. Check the admissions portal for the current window.

The qualifier is a 2-hour, 80-question online proctored test with +1 for each correct answer and no negative marking. It comes after the Mathematics Essentials course. Students who are eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced) in any year can skip the course and the qualifier and apply directly.

IIT Guwahati BSc vs IIT Madras BS: Which one is better?
Neither is better for everyone. IIT Guwahati’s BSc is more AI-focused, uses a Coursera-delivered format with structured lectures, and has online proctored exams in the first two years. IIT Madras’s BS is a longer-established program with a heavier workload according to one student who has done both. Choose based on your subject interest, time available and how you handle self-paced study.

The programme does not offer conventional on-campus recruitment. It offers career support through the IIT Guwahati Online Career Placement Cell and Coursera Hiring Solutions, including mock interviews and resume guidance.
