Study material is mainly printed or downloadable, and you write exams at a centre.<\/p><p>It does not suit you if you want live classes, a campus, or placement drives. If those matter, compare it with an <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/apnafuture.in\/blog\/online-mba-for-working-professionals\/\">online MBA<\/a> or a regular MBA.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_a_Distance_MBA_Works_Study_Material_Contact_Classes_and_Exams\"><\/span>How a Distance MBA Works: Study Material, Contact Classes and Exams<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><ul><li><strong>Study material:<\/strong> printed self-learning material (SLM) or a downloadable e-book. In a reply to an RTI query, UGC said it does not allow a 1-year MBA (see this <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/news.careers360.com\/ugc-guidelines-does-not-approve-one-year-mba-2-year-course-aicte-rti-reply\">Careers360 report<\/a>). A 1-year programme gives a diploma or certificate, not a degree.<\/p><h3>Check 2: Are the university and the MBA in the UGC-DEB ODL list?<\/h3><p>The university must be in the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/deb.ugc.ac.in\/\">UGC-DEB list<\/a> for ODL, and the MBA must be listed against it for your admission year. UGC&#8217;s RTI reply says the Distance Education Bureau can confirm a university&#8217;s recognition status. Our sheet of 81 universities is built from the two UGC-DEB lists (recognition and entitled), which together name 80 universities, plus IGNOU, which we added.<\/p><h3>Check 3: Is AICTE approval needed?<\/h3><p>Since a 2024 UGC decision, central, state and private universities do not need prior AICTE approval to offer management programmes in ODL or online mode (see this <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/news.careers360.com\/ugc-allows-central-state-private-universities-start-odl-online-courses-without-aicte-approval\/amp\">report<\/a>). <strong>Deemed universities still need AICTE approval or an NOC.<\/strong> If the university is deemed, ask for its AICTE approval letter for the current academic year and check its status on the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/facilities.aicte-india.org\/dashboard\/\">AICTE portal<\/a>.<\/p><h3>Myth: Is there an IIM distance MBA?<\/h3><p>No. IIMs are Institutes of National Importance under the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/iima.ac.in\/news\/iim-bill-passed-institutions-be-autonomous-start-granting-degrees-instead-diplomas\">IIM Act, 2017<\/a>, so they do not come under UGC&#8217;s university lists. Their working-professional programmes are blended or executive, for example the IIM Ahmedabad BPGP and the IIM Lucknow Blended MBA.
