In a world where Data Science and AI fundamentals matter for almost every career, that is the idea behind the program. <strong>It launched in 2020, and the first batch started in January 2021.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Who can apply:<\/strong> Anyone who has completed Class 12 or an <a href=\"https:\/\/study.iitm.ac.in\/ds\/admissions.html#AD4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accepted equivalent<\/a>, from any stream (Science, Commerce or Arts). This includes a 3-year recognised diploma or Class 12 through NIOS open schooling. Students who have appeared for their Class 11 final exams can also apply for the qualifier. IIT Madras expects applicants to have studied Mathematics and English in Class 10.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Age limit:<\/strong> None. Regular entry (Qualifier Process).<\/strong> You get 4 weeks of coursework in four Foundation courses: English I, Mathematics I, Statistics I and Computational Thinking. In simple terms, you first study the material through lectures and weekly assignments, then take an <strong>in-person, 4-hour qualifier exam<\/strong> covering all four courses. The exam is not online.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. JEE entry.<\/strong> If you are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced, you can skip the Qualifier Process. You fill in the application form, pay the \u20b94,000 admission fee and submit proof of eligibility.<\/p>\n<p>The degree has three terms every year: January, May and September.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who is studying here today?<\/strong> The official site reports <strong>36,000+ students<\/strong> currently studying. Over 20,000 of them are pursuing another degree alongside this one, and 3,000+ are working professionals.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_many_students_complete_IIT_Madras_Online_BS_Data_Science_Degree_The_truth_about_the_%E2%80%9C99_dropout_rate%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>How many students complete IIT Madras Online BS Data Science Degree? The truth about the &#8220;99% dropout rate&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>According to IIT Madras&#8217;s program report, 69,280 students have started the degree, but only 623 have completed the full BS. <strong>That is under 1%.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When we first saw this number, it looked like a 99% dropout rate. Then we checked the timeline. The program began in 2021, and the full BS takes 4\u20135 years. A student who joined in 2023 or 2024 cannot have finished by 2026, even if they are perfectly on track. <strong>So this is not a dropout rate.<\/strong> Many of these students are still moving through the program.<\/p>\n<p>Dropouts do exist, though. For the BS degree you complete the first 4. The other 2 are optional and lead to a PG Diploma and an MTech in AI &amp; ML. Think of it as a ladder where you can <strong>exit at every stage with a qualification and certificate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Level 1: Foundation (8 courses, 32 credits).<\/strong> You study Mathematics for Data Science I and II, Statistics for Data Science I and II, Computational Thinking, English I and II, and Programming in Python. You must complete all 8 before moving to the Diploma level.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Level 2: Diplomas (Programming and Data Science).<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Programming:<\/em> databases, data structures and algorithms, Java, and web application development, with two projects.<\/li>\n<li><em>Data Science:<\/em> Machine Learning Foundations, Techniques and Practice, Business Data Management and Tools in Data Science. You then choose a Business Analytics track or an Introduction to Deep Learning and Generative AI track.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After both Diplomas, you have 86 credits including Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Level 3: BSc.<\/strong> This adds 28 credits (114 in total). You can exit here with a BSc in Programming and Data Science from IIT Madras, or continue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Level 4: BS degree.<\/strong> The core courses are Software Engineering, Software Testing, AI: Search Methods for Problem Solving, Deep Learning and Strategies for Professional Growth. You also choose from a large pool of electives, including Large Language Models, NLP, MLOps and Mathematical Foundations of Generative AI. This takes the total to <strong>142 credits<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>The workload is heavy<\/h3>\n<p>This is not a normal four-year college experience.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Each year has 3 terms, and each term has 12 weeks of coursework.<\/li>\n<li>You can register for up to 4 courses per term.<\/li>\n<li>IIT Madras estimates about 10 hours per course per week at Foundation level and 15 hours at Diploma and Degree levels.<\/li>\n<li>Each course has weekly online assignments, monthly in-person quizzes and an in-person end-term exam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With four courses, that works out to roughly <strong>40 hours a week at Foundation level and up to 60 hours at Diploma\/Degree level<\/strong>. Self-secured jobs and internships<\/h3>\n<p>These are students who found opportunities on their own and later reported in a survey that the degree helped. In the January 2026 term alone, students self-secured <strong>1,115 internships and 379 jobs<\/strong>, according to IIT Madras&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/e\/2PACX-1vTMkC7ncc_f6pmMEA19ffqqvYKVl6Ld5eSvMoKxr8ukQBIa5YOZ5ME0i-lFiuIHiuSdBfgToXG0pdnu\/pub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Career Choices Report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 345 students who reported salaries for new jobs in that term:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>35 reported more than \u20b920 LPA<\/li>\n<li>54 reported \u20b910\u201320 LPA<\/li>\n<li>256 reported less than \u20b910 LPA<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>IIT Madras notes that the much larger salaries mostly belong to working professionals with many years of experience.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Placements through the IIT Madras Industry Interaction Cell (IIC)<\/h3>\n<p>In September 2025, 62 companies advertised jobs through IIC, 58 students applied and 49 secured jobs. You may or may not qualify, so do not build your plan around a waiver.<\/p>\n<h3>Time is a cost too<\/h3>\n<p>IIT Madras&#8217;s FAQ says the full program can take 3\u20136 years, and a part-time learner typically finishes in 4\u20135. The full path through MTech can run up to 8 years.<\/p>\n<p>If you are doing it alongside another full-time degree, be realistic about the workload. It can be a great addition, though. If you are studying BTech Computer Science, this program adds skills and credentials on top.
